Victor Cook majored in art at the University of Wyoming. There, he studied under Ilya
Bolotowski who was part of the visual arts movement led by Piet Mondrian and the Dutch
design group known as de Stijl. At The Art Institute of Chicago,
Mr. Cook produced several scale models of orthogonal structural compositions in the manner
of de Stijl – first a sofa, then a house, followed by a chair and a coffee
table.
Most of the works on this site were created in the last fifteen years. Some of
the pieces, like the Cordell Sofa and Sud Möbel Chair, are restorations
of prototypes produced thirty years ago. Many of the designs are new.
All of the pieces were photographed in the designer's studio.
Personal Reflections on The Style Collection:
Confessions of a Wood Lover
by Victor Cook
When I was a boy I went to Bible school in a Methodist Church. I received a satin ribbon for the name of every book of the Old Testament I could recite from memory.
| It was in a small church in the drought stricken plains of southern Oklahoma that we opened the kneeling rails. I loved the sound of wood-hitting-wood as the rail hit the floor. It was unlike any other sound I had ever heard. I thought the heavens were speaking to me through the wood. |

Surprisingly, you can hear that sound again, without even going to Church. Just hit together two rails of any piece in The Style Collection during assembly and you will find the sound equally unforgettable.
