Early in the last century the idea for structures built with square wooden sticks joined
at right angles was born in the loosely organized Dutch design group known by the title of
its monthly magazine,
de Stijl. The most famous of its founders was
Piet
Mondrian. His
Composition with Line (Pier and Ocean) detail is pictured above.

The member of the group most responsible for the idea
of linear structural models was
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. His idea was embodied in the
